Thanks to renewable energy, L.A. electricity rates skyrocket

The city of Los Angeles plans to raise its citizen's utility bills in the hopes of driving up the usage of renewable energy.



Determined to fulfill his pledge to require Los Angeles to derive 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by end of the year, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is moving ahead with plans to impose a stiff carbon surcharge on monthly utility bills. The mayor's goal is to push the city's Dept. of Water and Power (DWP) away from coal and toward wind and solar energy. Under the plan unveiled March 15, households that get their power from DWP could see their electricity bills increase by 8.8 to 28.4%, depending on where they live and how much energy they use. The plan will be phased in over the next year.
