IO modules meet safety standards

Siemens has expanded its Simatic ER 200iSP I/O system to meet safety standards IEC 61508 up to SIL 3 or ISO 13849-1 up to PLe e.


Siemens has expanded its Simatic ET 200iSP I/O system with three new modules to accommodate safety standards IEC 61508 up to SIL 3 or ISO 13849-1 up to PLe e. The modules are suitable for emergency shutdown, boiler protection and fire and gas equipment applications.

The ET 200iSP is a modular I/O system for hazardous areas, including gaseous and dusty atmospheres. Its sensors and actuators are connected directly to a bus system and the I/O system may be mounted in a non-explosion proof cabinet.

The I/O system is FM approved for mounting in Class 1 Div 2 and Class 1 Zone 1 areas connecting directly to devices mounted in Class 1 Div 1 and Class 1 Zone 0 without the need for external safety barriers.

The isolating transformer within the ET 200iSP is a bus isolating transformer, creating a Profibus DP intrinsically safe communications network.

Function modules, including an explosion proof power supply, Profibus DP interface modules, and up to 32 electronics modules in any combination are plugged into terminal modules. The ability to "Hot Swap" the electronic module during operation is a huge customer benefit to avoid costly downtime of stopping the controller. The firmware of the Profibus DP interface module may be upgraded as new firmware is available using a micro memory card (MMC) or over Profibus DP.

Redundancy is available with redundant power supplies and Profibus DP interface modules providing maximum uptime. When used in a redundant configuration, the power supplies are hot swappable and maybe replaced under power even in hazardous locations.

The ET 200iSP is configured and parameterized using Simatic Step 7 or PCS 7 software. Supporting Configuration in Run (CiR) system functions, the ET 200iSP configurations and parameterization may easily be modified during runtime.

Extensive diagnostic information is provided, pinpointing open or closed circuit faults. Fault information is sent to the host system, permitting fast online diagnostics from a central location. Standard diagnostic drivers are available for Siemens Simatic PCS 7 distributed control systems.

Process devices are linked with Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) technology using an analog signal of 4-20 mA. A central station can transparently access HART process devices using a routing function with Profibus DP. As a result, most process instruments, including temperature, fill-level, pressure, and flow rate measuring equipment, may be accessed and configured.
