Texas Utility To Offer Internet Access Via Power Lines

The largest utility in Texas, TXU Corp., is planning to begin offering broadband Internet access over its power lines this year. The utility is turning to Germantown, Md.-based Current Communications for the technology underpinning the new service.
In addition to providing a new revenue potential, Current Communications' "Smart Grid" system promises to offer real-time monitoring of TXU's grid for power-quality problems, as well as automated restoration detection. The system also is said to provide automated meter reading via its online connection.
As part of the $150 million deal, TXU will join Google, Inc., and Cincinnati-based utility Cinergy Corp. as an equity investor in Current Communications Group.
