ASHRAE Amends 62

By Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 7/1/2003

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers recently posted on its web site an addendum to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. The addendum, 62o, changes the ventilation requirements to apply only to non-smoking spaces while still providing design guidance for controlling odor in indoor spaces that allow smoking.

Specifically, according to the addendum, the standard's table on outdoor air ventilation requirements will be changed to apply to non-smoking areas only, and smoking lounges will be deleted from a table on outdoor ventilation requirements. In that same table, a footnote now explains that the table applies to non-smoking areas. The addendum also requires smoking areas to have more ventilation and air cleaning.

Addendum 62o's approval at ASHRAE's 2002 annual meeting received six appeals, which were all considered but eventually denied at the association's 2003 winter meeting.

The addendum is available for free at http://xp20.ashrae.org/STANDARDS/62-2001_add_menu.htm.
