Renewable Briefs

Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 12/1/2001

AEP and TXU are expanding the size of a wind-power generation facility under construction near Abilene, Tex., from an original 130 mW to 150 mW. AEP is the builder, owner and operator; TXU is power buyer.

Akzo Nobel and Shell have agreed to develop a pilot project that will seek to mass-produce flexible solar photovoltaic panels at a low cost. Philippe de Renzy Martin, chief operating officer of Shell Solar, claims that the market for solar power will grow at 16 to 25% annually.

RealEnergy LLC, Woodland Hills, Calif., will install solar panels at several sites in California where the company was already putting cogeneration power systems in place. "These are buildings that previously drew 100% of their electricity from the power grid," said a company spokesperson. The new installs will deliver at least half of every building's energy needs, the company claimed.

Xantrex Technology, Vancouver, B.C., working with supplier AstroPower, is providing a complete solar electric power system to power production equipment used in filming the TV show This Renewable House. The TV program is produced by and shown on the Public Broadcasting System.
