Electricity Worries Hit the Top of Business Agendas

It's clear that electricity's availability, quality and cost have become a growing source of worry" for businesses, says David Reichman, president of RKS Research & Consulting, North Salem, N.Y. An RKS research project, in which 831 energy decision-makers in eight U.S. industries were interviewed, found that 34 percent of those surveyed employ on-site generation. Other highlights of the survey are:
- Percent of respondents who have purchased insurance to protect against power-outage-caused business interruptions: 30.
- Percent who say their companies have suffered financial losses from power outages: 34.
- Percent who say they were interested in generating their own electricity to reduce demand: 58.
Half either owned or leased backup generating equipment; nearly one quarter are considering expanding or upgrading those installations.
