Only 4% of the 296,000 megawatts of new power generation capacity needed by 2015 will be fired by coal, according to a research study by RDI Consulting, Munhall, Pa.. Currently, 52% of U.S. electric output comes from coal. By 2015, however, natural gas will cover 279,000 MW of power generation, while renewable energy such as solar, hydro and wind will account for 5,000 MW. Coal will only fuel 11,400 MW.
