DOE awards $204 million in efficient energy funding
Building retrofits for energy efficiency among activities eligible for state funding.

The Obama administration made a "historic down payment" on clean energy and conservation on June 24 by allocating $204 million of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for energy projects in 10 states. Amongst other energy-saving activities, the ARRA money can be allocated by the states to building retrofits and other sustainable energy projects.The 10 states to receive ARRA money were Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, and Washington. Under the Dept. of Energy (DOE)'s State Energy Program (SEP), states proposed plans to prioritize energy savings and the use of renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create or retain jobs. SEP received a total of $3.1 billion from ARRA and will continue appropriating money to help achieve national energy independence goals and promote local economic recovery.
Besides green building and construction efforts, SEP money can be allocated to fund energy audits, building education and training efforts, alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles, and new financing mechanisms.
