Even though this summer brought fewer blackouts to California than the summer of 2000, a state energy agency report warns of the next energy hurdle—inadequate gas pipeline capacity.
With a number of natural gas-fired power plants, delivering thousands of megawatts of electricity, scheduled to come on-line over the next few years, a beefed up gas infrastructure will be critical to handle the load, states a recent California Energy Commission (CEC) report.
Specifically, the CEC is calling for an increase in interstate and in-state natural gas pipeline capacity, coordinated planning and updated design criteria.
As a result, developers anticipate that billions of dollars will be spent to build up the state’s gas infrastructure over the next few years.
