MEng mechanical engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England

Hilary Williams, CEng MIMechE, LEED AP BD+C; 40

Williams is an associate and mechanical engineer in Arup’s Boston office, where she manages the mechanical team and is responsible for engineering design, project management, quality control, and business development on a wide range of building projects, focusing on science and education. Over the past 17 years, she has been involved in projects throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East, working in Arup’s London, New York, and Boston offices. Her international experience gives her a unique insight into a wide variety of design approaches and standards. Williams began her career in Arup’s London office, working on a variety of building types including offices, university buildings, theaters, art galleries, hotels, health care facilities, and laboratories. Working as part of multidisciplinary engineering teams has influenced her holistic approach to design and coordination. She has developed expertise in advanced thermal and energy modeling and computational fluid dynamics to aid in the design process (through lifecycle cost analysis and optimization) to inform design decisions and fine-tune the systems to reduce energy consumption and cost. Key projects include the UMass Lowell Health and Social Science building, Northeastern University Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Lowell Judicial Center, and Westfield State University’s Dr. Nettie Stevens Science Center. Williams volunteers with the ACE Mentor Program, which works with high school students to promote careers in the design and construction fields, giving the students a taste of what the industry does and providing scholarships and grants to students. She has also volunteered with Boston Food Bank and participated in multiple charity hikes and Habitat for Humanity build-day events. Her hobbies include hiking, playing the fiddle and guitar, traveling, reading, and biking to work.
