Google steps into the smart grid
With the introduction of a Web-based tool that permits property owners to monitor their electrical consumption, the search-engine giant has made its mark in the drive for greater efficiency and smarter power consumption.
As reported in the New York Times , Google has entered into the smart-grid race with the introduction of PowerMeter , a free Web-based service that consumers can harness to track energy use as it is consumed.
The device is designed to control the demand for power, stemming the need to build more power plants. Google is looking for other companies to create devices capable of feeding data into the PowerMeter technology. Although it hopes to begin introducing the service sometime in the next few months, to date it has no hardware manufacturers lined up.
