Boiler insights

  • In early 2024, Consulting-Specifying Engineer asked mechanical engineers about boiler specifications, specifically about brands, integration and future insights.
  • Respondents’ boiler specifications have been impacted by recent regulatory changes in terms of improved efficiency, the requirement of electric boilers and NOx emissions having to be carefully reviewed.

Mechanical engineers and those who specify and design boilers provided feedback via a Consulting-Specifying Engineer Boilers research study in early 2024. The biggest takeaway from this study is that clients (building owners) are significantly influenced by the energy efficiency of the boiler when making decisions. This sentiment is echoed again when looking at regulatory changes. When asked, 58% of respondents said that regulatory changes have impacted specifications to improve efficiency.

Here are five more things to know about boiler technologies:

  • Energy efficiency, product quality and previous experience are the top factors influencing brand choice for boilers. Initial product cost, brand reputation and alignment with project requirements are also significant factors.
  • Technical compatibility and a lack of understanding the sequence of operations are the main challenges with boilers faced by respondents in terms of integrating with building management systems.
  • When retrofitting or upgrading existing boiler systems, cost issues are the top challenge for respondents, followed by finding compatible systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Improved efficiency, lower water temperatures and a reduced footprint are the most anticipated future developments in boiler technology.
  • Most respondents indicated their clients’ budgets for boiler projects have increased over the past two years; the majority also anticipate their clients’ budgets to continue to increase due to boiler system technological advancements and sustainability considerations.

Boiler survey methodology

The HVAC & Mechanical Systems: Boilers study was conducted by Consulting-Specifying Engineer to obtain insights from engineers and engineering management professionals on brand awareness, specifying behavior and current and future trends related to boiler systems.

The sample for this study was selected from qualified subscribers of Consulting-Specifying Engineer media with valid email addresses who personally select, specify or design HVAC products for new construction and modernization projects.
