Caldwell is a distinguished mechanical engineer renowned for his contributions to decarbonization and high-performance building design. Based in Washington, D.C., he is a leading figure at SmithGroup, driving innovation and sustainability in engineering solutions. Caldwell’s journey began in central Maryland, where a high school engineering class ignited his passion for design. At Lafayette College, he pursued mechanical engineering while playing varsity lacrosse. After college, his focus shifted to high-performance building design and sustainability and he swiftly gained expertise in the mission critical field. Caldwell’s portfolio spans diverse sectors including higher education, science and technology, health care and cultural institutions. Notable projects include the Henry Ford Cancer Institute Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion and the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus. Caldwell spearheaded electrification efforts at Virginia Tech, showcasing his commitment to clean energy solutions and decarbonization. He also has contributed to campuswide carbon emission reduction planning, exemplified by his work at North Carolina State University.
