2011 POY Finalists: Emergency, On-site, Standby Power

Finalists in Emergency, On-site, Standby Power in Consulting-Specifying Engineer's 2011 Product of the Year competition

Residential generator set

The Cummins Onan RS20 residential generator set offers self-diagnostic capability, automatic load management, and weather-protective enclosure. The electronic governor allows for precise frequency control. The unit operates quietly and can run on either natural gas or liquefied petroleum (LP) gas. It connects directly to a fuel system and electrical system to eliminate the need to fill a gas tank or manually transfer power from the utility. The generator features utility-grade power quality, an indoor display, email notifications, remote monitoring via the Internet, and a patented design enclosure for easy installation and maintenance access.

Uninterruptible power system (UPS)

Eaton’s BladeUPS preassembled system is designed for data center managers interested in consolidating stand-alone UPSs to ease UPS management and enhance power capacity planning. The scalable and modular product expands power protection from 12 to 60 kW (N+1) in a 19-in. rack while reducing energy and cooling costs with its energy-efficient UPS design. Preassembled systems are available with two or six BladeUPS units, and all systems include batteries, communication cards, and internal system wiring. Modules are already installed in the information technology enclosure, and the entire system is tested prior to delivery.

Uninterruptible power system

The 9900B Series UPS System from Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. delivers a power rating of 750 kVA and maximum efficiency of more than 96%. To achieve increased capacity or redundancy, the product can be configured in a parallel system of up to eight units. The modular system architecture saves on floor space by providing the option of adding or removing modules. The products have a 30% smaller footprint than typical UPS modules with a similar power rating. The system includes insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology controlled by the Mitsubishi Digital Signal Processor and direct digital control (DDC).

Generator set

The 550 kW prime-rated mobile generator set from MTU Onsite Energy is designed for application flexibility and is powered by the MTU 12V Series 1600 engine. The containerized unit is sound-attenuated and is intended for applications involving mobile emergency power or rental power. The unit comes with digital controls and a 24-hr internal fuel tank. The generator can operate at 100%-rated load over 24 hrs; typical generator sets are rated to 75%. The product also features switchable 50/60 Hz frequency and switchable voltage settings from 208 to 480 V in the 60 Hz mode.

Uninterruptible power system

Toshiba’s G9000 uninterruptible power systems are designed for stand-alone or parallel use in up to eight-unit configurations, without requiring a special switchgear cabinet. The double-conversion topology provides an ac/dc/ac efficiency of 97% at loads from 50% to 100%. The insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) design eliminates the need for a front-end harmonic filter and produces less than 3% input current total harmonic distortion. The product does not need an output transformer, thus improving efficiency and reducing weight, noise, and total footprint. It supports 100% unbalanced loads and 100% step-load changes without battery discharge.
