Bungane Mehlomakulu, PE, LEED AP, 32

Principal, IBE Consulting Engineers, Sherman Oaks, Calif.

Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario), BS Mechanical Engineering

After joining IBE Consulting Engineers at age 23, Mehlomakulu quickly rose through the ranks and was named one of four principals after just eight years at the firm. Those who work under him appreciate having an experienced mentor, and the other principals are glad to have a young colleague who gives an air of inspiration. Mehlomakulu specializes in the design of radiant, displacement, and passive mechanical systems, and is currently integrating 3-D and BIM modeling into the MEP design process, maintenance, and control systems for building owners. He led a team of HVAC engineers for University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts projects, for which BIM covered all aspects of the project, from programming to facilities management. Mehlomakulu was applauded for his effort in explaining and convincing the client to use hydraulic cooling and heating, a key component to the design. He also worked on the Water + Life Museum, which received six sustainable design awards, including the first LEED Platinum rating for a museum. Though Mehlomakulu served as project manager for high-profile green projects, he also shows that sustainable engineering isn’t just for flashy cultural or educational facilities. His team also worked on the highly efficient Step Up on Fifth project, which provides a home, support services, and rehabilitation for the homeless and mentally disabled. Mehlomakulu’s expertise on building modeling and controls earned him the honor of presenting at the ASHRAE 2007 National Conference and other ASHRAE Southern California chapter meetings that year. In an effort to encourage and develop professionals in the sustainable building industry, he volunteered on the steering committee for the emerging professionals group of USGBC-LA chapter and has been guest lecturer at four higher-education institutions. Mehlomakulu got married in 2010, and he spends his free time with his new bride recreating their favorite restaurant dishes at home, hiking, and biking on the beach.
