Aliza Skolnik, LEED AP, GGP, 27
Associate, Environmental Systems Design, Chicago
Washington University-St. Louis, BS Systems Science Engineering
Skolnik has two energy-related goals that drive her actions: optimizing energy efficiency and exuding great personal energy. As an energy modeler and commissioning agent at Environmental Systems Design (ESD), she takes a holistic approach to sustainable solutions. She currently serves as project manager for a “green assessment” of 52 public housing facilities for the Chicago Housing Authority and is responsible for Energy Star benchmarking analysis, creating a Green Operations and Maintenance Manual, assisting in MEP-related training, and several site visits and reports. She also led a team to analyze 21 federal buildings for the General Services Administration; they suggested 330 energy conservation measures that can save 191 billion Btu of energy and $4.2 million annually when implemented. Skolnik is the business development representative for the Energy and Eco Services group at ESD, and she is always eager to network with other industry professionals. As a new employee at ESD, she started a New People’s Lunch group and more recently a Women in Engineering group to encourage a collaborative, social work atmosphere. Because of her speaking skills and extensive knowledge of green building rating systems, she is a highly sought-after speaker. Skolnik stepped in last-minute as a speaker for a 2010 Consulting-Specifying Engineer webcast with more than 1,000 attendees. She has presented twice for the Building Owners and Managers Assn., including a keynote speech on Energy Star. She was also invited to participate in a panel discussion on benchmarking and energy disclosure at Ecobuild America in Washington, D.C. Skolnik believes in the power of people, which is why she has served as co-chair of the ESD outreach committee. She spearheads the company team for CANstruction, a design-build competition benefitting the Greater Chicago Food Depository. In her free time, she enjoys running, cooking, and acting, and she recently played a lead female role in the original film “Thriller Theater.”
