The Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints Hospital in Racine, Wis., recently unveiled a newly expanded and renovated cancer center for which RTM Engineering Consultants provided electrical engineering. The 9,000-sq-ft expansion of the center and the renovation of 22,000-sq-ft of existing space add new capabilities while keeping patient comfort top of mind.
The updated center offers more spacious areas for the patients and staff as well as new spaces for community education, a pharmacy, and a blood-draw room. On the lower level, the hospital expanded the radiation oncology clinic and treatment areas while the first floor was renovated and expanded to house the medical oncology clinic and infusion areas. A new mobile-technology dock was incorporated along the north side of the building, to the east of the existing linear accelerator and close to an existing door to improve ease of access to the mobile Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography unit.
RTM employed various sustainable design techniques including LED lighting, reduced lighting-power density, and automatic lighting controls. Since the LED lights are dimmable, patients and their families can customize the lighting levels to their liking, creating a more personalized and inviting environment.
Replacing the existing essential electrical system presented significant challenges. RTM worked closely with the design team and hospital staff early on to coordinate the phasing of renovation and construction to maintain operations and minimize disruptions for patients and staff.
