In 2005, Hurricane Katrina damaged the Gulf Coast of the United States, particularly New Orleans. In response to the natural disaster, Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. enacted a program that allowed them to rebuild damaged grocery stores in the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster caused them to close.
In October 2007, the Winn-Dixie store in New Orleans East marked a significant milestone by hosting the remote NASDAQ opening. The event marked the first NASDAQ opening from a grocery store and the first ever in Louisiana.
The 50,709 sq ft facility was the first full-service grocery store to return to the community after the hurricane. Winn-Dixie chose to install a 600 kW diesel generator from Cummins Power Generation Inc. The weatherproof generator provides electricity to the entire store in the event of a power outage. Fully compliant with NFPA 110 for Level 1 systems, the generator provides the Winn-Dixie store with a graphical data display. The display allows the operator to view all engine and alternator data; perform operator adjustments for speed, voltage, and time delays; view fault history; and set up and adjust the generator set.
The standby generator features a PowerCommand iWatch wireless monitoring system that links the generator set with cellular and satellite networks. Users access operational data using the Internet or receive e-mails or text messages about alarm condition updates. The system uses a Modbus or hard-wired interface to communicate with a Web server. The standby generator, equipped with automatic transfer switches and a 3,600-gal, sub-base fuel tank, sits atop an 8-ft-high, flood-protected platform.
According to Shawn Sloan, director of energy for Winn-Dixie, the complete reconstruction of the New Orleans East store is part of a multi-phase effort in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi to upgrade 500 stores within the next four years.
“When natural disasters strike, a full powered retail grocery location plays a critical role in the devastated communities. These standby generators will enable our stores to remain fully operational—providing refrigeration, lighting, and business services—in the event of a natural disaster or power outage,” Sloan said.
Cummins worked with its distributor, Cummins Power South LLC, as the primary equipment and service supplier. Winn-Dixie chose Preservation Power LLC to manage the project. The two companies collaborated to meet the aggressive schedule for the first two phases of the project, which include solving a number of store energy load management issues.
Preservation Power and its subcontractor, Chain Electric, expedited the permitting and commissioning process. Cummins compressed the delivery schedule on the 600-kW diesel unit, both of which set a record from order placement to commissioning and operation.
