New ANSI Standards for Make-Up Air Heaters

Now that the American National Standards Institute has revised its standards for direct gas-fired make-up heaters and industrial air heaters, engineers specifying this equipment should start double-checking that manufacturers are meeting these requirements after the scheduled implementation date of January 1, 2002.
The new ANSI Standards—Z83.4 for recirculating heaters and Z83.18 for non-recirculating heaters—will require that two airflow switches be supplied with each unit in order to evaluate the burner’s combustion performance at the extreme high and low limits of the unit’s operating range.
In addition, manufacturers will be required to provide more labeling information detailing certified capacities and heater inputs to eliminate false performance claims such as maximum temperature rise and discharge temperature.
Even though these ANSI standards allow for the room contamination levels for recirculating heaters to approach maximum American Conference of Governmental Hygienists limits for CO, CO 2 and NO 2 , the standard’s requirement that the discharge temperature be reduced as the percentage of recirculated room air increases may be difficult to achieve without an adequate control system.
