Caterpillar Inc. has its first midrange generator set meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions standards (PDF). Powered by the Cat C15 engine, the ratings for the 60-Hz package is 500-ekW (standby) and 455-ekW (prime). Building on the attributes of the C15 diesel generator set with ACERT Technology, this package offers service intervals, fuel consumption rates, and power density.

Using an electronically controlled air management system, the advanced emissions control on the engine acts to lower combustion temperature, achieving decreased NOx output. The EPA-regulated levels are met without the need for after-treatment. By relying on engine technology alone, customers reportedly benefit from the most cost-effective solution, which minimizes impact on installation size, operating practices, and maintenance complexity.
