Broadview, Ill-based Unified Group announced that Shoffner Mechanical Services , Knoxville, Tenn., will become the newest member in the group. The Unified Group assesses prospective members based on the number of years in business, commitment to training, awards/accolades received, positive customer and vender references, and a desire to improve or grow the service side of the business.

Overland Park, Ka-based DLR Group’s managing principal Bryce Pearsall, FAIA, received the 2009 Christian Peterson Design Award presented by Iowa State University’s College of Design . Established in 1980, the Petersen award is given annually for distinguished work that encompasses personal achievements, exceptional support and extraordinary service advancing the design and art professions.

Pullman, Wash.-based Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. (SEL) was ranked number one by the North American electric utilities in a survey conducted by the Newton-Evans Research Co. Inc. "The Worldwide Study of the Protective Relay Marketplace in Electric Utilities: 2009-2011-Volumbe 1: North American Market" surveyed utility protection and control engineers and engineering managers from 99 utilities. Utilities chose SEL as the number one manufacturer in all eight categories: technology, price, flexibility to add new features, technical service and support, security against hackers, ease of use/relay setup, maintenance cost, and web information.

Memphis, Tenn.-based Holiday Inn will undergo a $1 billion global re-launch to the brand’s more than 3,200 hotel locations. A redesign of the brand logo will require new exterior signage for the more than 3,200 locations. The signage will incorporate energy efficient, GE Tetra LED lighting systems , which are GE-ecomagination-certified. The new signage will save Holiday Inn an estimated $4.4 million annually over previous neon and fluorescent lighting. More than 20 sign manufacturers will create 9,300 channel letter and box signs with the GE lighting inside.

Kennesaw, Ga.-based MACTEC has been awarded a $3.8 million contract by the United States Air Force to conduct facility condition assessments at 10 bases worldwide. Slated for completion by Dec. 2009, includes assessment of office buildings, warehouses, utilities, roadways, airfield pavements, and selected site development features.

The Buffalo, N.Y.-branch of Cannon Design received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada 2009 Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture for its design of the Richmond Olympic Oval project. The speed-skating venue for the 2010 Winter Games is a $178 million complex that received a LEED-Silver certification.

Palatine, Ill.-based Schneider Electric announced that its Nashville, Tenn.-based facility has obtained certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. The facility handles marketing, accounting, finance, and engineering operations for Schneider Electric and is one of only three commercial interiors in Nashville and the state of Tennessee to have LEED certification.
