2022 40 Under 40: Saagar Patel, PE, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, CCP, 36

Patel is a seasoned and demonstrated expert in energy and sustainability — especially when it’s related to design and construction. He also is adept with analytics and data, giving him focused insights on the projects he works on. Patel has a passion for meeting the needs and wants of clients while also being transparent and efficient in his dealings with them. This was best exemplified in a monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) project where Patel saw the untapped potential of what software and data analytics could do for building operations and energy reduction. This quickly became his obsession. Having access to the information provides all facility stakeholders an intimate understanding of their building operations. By expanding MBCx offerings to high schools and life science facilities, Patel discovered new opportunities that optimize building operations, reduce energy and promote occupant health. His work with MBCx processes helped a Chicago-area high school be awarded International Living Future Institute Zero Energy certification as well as be the first net zero energy building in Illinois. Patel has a passion for helping his community and serves on advisory boards for the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago and is active in creating a future that is focused on energy efficiency and decarbonization. He has written or co-written several articles for engineering publications and has presented on topics such as HVAC and MBCx. To relax, Patel enjoys skiing with his friends and playing golf and also enjoys cooking and grilling for his wife, two young daughters and extended family.
