2022 40 Under 40: Erik Elmtoft, PE, PMP, LEED AP, WELL AP, 32

Elmtoft is a collaborative and industrious mechanical engineer and project manager focused on sustainability and high-performance design within the built environment. His experience consists of multiple national and global LEED, WELL and Zero Net Energy/Zero Net Carbon projects. Elmtoft was born and raised in Varnamo, Sweden, which is in located within the trademarked “Gnosjo Region,” known for family-owned industries, hard work and entrepreneurship. Elmtoft earned his bachelor’s degree at one of the top four Swedish engineering institutions, after which he came to San Francisco to explore new frontiers and eventually joined AlfaTech. He has been a mentor to many engineers of diverse backgrounds. His friendly demeanor and flexible style make it easy for younger professionals to find common ground with him. Elmtoft’s full attention is on his client’s needs and delivering on the firm’s targets. Elmtoft develops solid relationships with clients and he is a proven go-to resource for future endeavors. His work includes notable high-rise corporate offices, manufacturing and industrial process facilities, R&D labs, mixed-use buildings and higher education. He also is active in several engineering organizations and was an inaugural member of the ASHRAE Standards Committee 228P: Standard Method of Evaluating Zero Energy and Zero Carbon Building Performance. Separate from work, Elmtoft is a passionate hiker and has visited each national park in California. He enjoys mushroom hunting when possible, especially to find the “Golden Chantarelle.” Elmtoft is a lifelong traveler and flew around the world before the pandemic. He is dedicated to his family and their well-being and loves spending time with his young nephews, who are as curious and excited about the world as he is.
