2018 40 Under 40: Shannon Allison, LEED AP BD+C; 38

By Jack Smith, Content Manager; Amara Rozgus, Editor-in-Chief May 14, 2018

Associate Principal, Mechanical Designer; Integral Group, Oakland, Calif.

BS architectural engineering, University of Wyoming, Laramie

Allison’s passion for environmentalism initially started her down an educational path toward marine biology, but quickly transitioned to the building design industry. After receiving her engineering degree, she moved back to California and settled in the Bay Area. There she worked for Mechanical Design Studio, a consulting firm in Walnut Creek, Calif., before joining Integral Group, where she has worked for 11 years. With a background in architectural engineering, Allison incorporates a holistic approach to mechanical engineering. This comprehensive perspective allows her to seamlessly integrate the various disciplines throughout a project’s lifespan. Her experience crosses multiple sectors, from higher education to high-rise residential. However, a common thread ties these together: a commitment to sustainability and design excellence, which has resulted in several LEED Platinum-and Gold-certified projects. In addition to her engineering excellence on numerous award-winning projects, Allison is a frequent presenter and speaker at conferences and industry events. Recently she presented “Sustainable Building Design—Females at the Forefront of Deep Green Engineering” at the 2017 Society of Women Engineers National Conference. Allison also has been an active volunteer with organizations such as Oakland’s Adopt-a-Spot, Coastal Cleanup Day, YMCA Building Futures, Spark Mentoring Program, LEAP Sandcastle Competition, Girls Inc., and other groups focused on sustainability and youth mentorship. Outside of work and volunteering, she likes to find some time for herself. Always the foodie, she is eager to try a new recipe she has discovered or the next restaurant that has just opened in the neighborhood. When not at home, she can be found globetrotting with her boyfriend. Next year, they plan to travel to Europe for a foodie adventure together. If the weekend is sunny, and she happens to be home, Allison spends time cultivating her garden.
