2011 POY Finalists: Lighting Controls
Finalists in Lighting Controls in Consulting-Specifying Engineer's 2011 Product of the Year competition
LED area luminaire
The McGraw-Edison Ventus outdoor LED area luminaire from Cooper Lighting is suitable for uniform and energy-conscious illumination for parking lots, building areas, roadways, and security lighting. It incorporates the modular LightBAR technology for 50,000-hrs rated life and bi-level switching options. The AccuLED Optics system provides shaped distributions and scalability to meet exact application requirements. The system is available in 2 to 12 IP66-rated system configurations including a family of spill light eliminator optics. The luminaire produces a warm white light of 4,000 K correlated color temperature and allows for passive cooling and natural cleaning of the extruded heat sink.
LED downlights
The Portfolio LED downlights from Cooper Lighting feature a diffused optical system with light control and low aperture brightness. The curved transitional lens design reduces LED source brightness for even illumination. Lumen packages range from 900 to 1,500 lumens with a choice of four color temperatures. System life is rated at 50,000 hrs at 70% lumen maintenance. The product features standard 0 to 10 V dimming capability down to 10%; or standard ac incandescent analog dimmers down to 15%, or down to 5% with dimmers that have a low-end trim adjustment. Flexible disconnect capability allows for tool-less replacement of LED engine from below the ceiling.
Relay control panels
The GreenMAX relay control panels from Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc. afford a short-circuit current rating of 25,000 A at 277 Vac. There are latching modules for incandescent and fluorescent loads, integrated dimming and switching capabilities, and daylight and smart metering features. The system includes relay cabinets and inserts, command modules, handheld display unit, power supplies, relays, and programmable digital switches. It supports a variety of native network protocols. Each relay panel can control up to 32,000 smart relays. Low-voltage inputs such as occupancy sensors, photocells, and switches connect to the system via an onboard low-voltage input card or remote input cabinet.
Volumetric recessed lighting
Lihonia Lighting’s RTLED is a volumetric recessed lighting fixture with a 50,000-hr system life. It can deliver ambient white light throughout a space or directional lighting. It has a color rendering index of 80-plus, 3500 K color temperature, and full range dimming with 0 to 10 Vdc control. The luminaire adjusts itself to avoid overlighting, tracks its own operating hours, and provides a visual indicator when it reaches the end of its service life. The luminaires are made with recyclable materials, recycled steel, and no mercury or lead. These compact lighting fixtures are powered by Samsung LED light engines and are only 3 1/8-in. deep.
Lighting control system
WattStopper’s Digital Lighting Management (DLM) networked system enables remote management of lighting controls throughout a floor, a building, or an entire campus. DLM local networks can include intelligent room controllers, occupancy sensors, personal controls, daylighting sensors, and interfaces. Each local network can be equipped with a BACnet-compatible network bridge for remote control by a BAS or a browser-based user interface on a PC, PDA, or a smartphone. The remote control can change sensor settings and system parameters, establish normal and after-hours schedules, and monitor power consumption of lighting and plug loads in real time.
