Marcus Keay, LEED AP, 39
Vice President, WSP Flack+Kurtz, San Francisco
Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland), Higher National Diploma in Building Services Engineering
Since his promotion to vice president at WSP Flack+Kurtz in 2006, Keay has led many of the firm’s most recognizable projects in the corporate, mission critical, academic, and mixed-use sectors. He is one of the San Francisco office’s HVAC leaders in the mission critical group, and he specializes in essential services, including on-site power generation and redundant systems design so building systems can survive interruption of all utility services. Two of his projects have earned LEED Gold, including a 33-story, 556,000-sq-ft office building in downtown San Francisco. Keay is currently the project manager for the Eight Avenue Place high-rise in Calgary, Alberta, which is precertified LEED Platinum. The building will use high-performance glazing systems to mitigate cold surface temperatures and enable the elimination of baseboard radiator systems in the tower. Another current project is the HP Global Workplace Initiative, which Keay spearheads. The initiative includes a total of 40 projects encompassing 3 million sq ft of office space in North and South America. It aims to renovate and construct HP facilities to reduce annual real estate costs while upgrading work environments for HP employees. Keay’s clients applaud his ability to adjust to changing circumstances and stringent requirements while sticking to schedule. He has comprehensive knowledge of San Francisco building codes and continues to work with his clients long after buildings are completed, especially for LEED projects that have commissioning, monitoring, and documentation requirements. Keay volunteers through his firm for Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization that works with preschool children in low-income Bay Area neighborhoods, and participates in the annual fundraising golf tournament for the Architecture, Construction, Engineering (ACE) Mentor program. Keay is a fisherman and an athlete; he has participated in 11 consecutive Escape from Alcatraz triathlons. He enjoys turning farmer’s market finds into gourmet meals for family and friends, including his baby daughter Phaedra.
