was elected 2009 president of the Arizona Section of the Illuminating

Engineering Society . SmithGroup graduate electrical Brett Lorenzen, EIT, LEED

AP , has been elected treasurer of the same section.

La Crosse, Wis.-based Michaels Engineering announced the election of Wane A. Baker , IAQ division

manager, as the first vice president of the Indoor Air Quality Assn .

Gary C. Patrick, AIA, was certified by the Roof Consultants

Institute (RCI) as a Registered Roof Consultant (RRC). The RCI requires that

all RRC applications satisfy education, ethics, and experience requirements,

along with completing a final exam.

Pittsburg, Calif.-based Performance Mechanical Inc . has received the President’s Safety Award and the Excellence in Safety Award by the Construction Employers’ Assn. The President’s

Safety Award and the Excellence in Safety award recognizes firms whose safety

program exceeds industry standards by 50% or more.

Baltimore, Md.-based Baltimore Aircoil Co . and Colmac Coil Manufacturing announced the formation of

a strategic alliance to provide Aircoil Evaporators to the industrial

refrigeration market.

Parsippany, N.J.-based New Jersey Board of Public Utilities recognized EarthColor with the 2008 N.J. Clean Energy Leadership Award-Clean

Power Purchaser of the Year . The project that earned EarthColor the award

centered on the conversion of the company’s four N.J. locations to 100%

renewable wind power, which resulted in an annual reduction of 5,634,00 KWh of

electricity per year.

Santa Fe, N.M.-based Uptime Institute Professional Services announced two enhancements to the Tier Program-the Owners Advisory Committee

(OAC) and the Accredited Tier Designer (ATD). The OAC will be responsible for

arbitrating future changes to both the Tier Standard Topology and the

Operational Sustainability Criteria. The ATD will be a comprehensive training

course for design professionals to enhance understanding of the practical

applications of the Tiers.

Emergency Operations

Aurora, Colo.-based Merrick

& Co’s completed project, the Fire Crash Rescue Station 1 , located at

Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., received a Citation Award from the A ir Combat

Command in Langley, Va. The project was recognized for its

overall design that incorporates innovation, anti-terrorism, force-protection,

and sustainable design.

Alpharetta, Ga.-based MACTEC

Engineering announced that the recently completed environmental services

projects done for the U.S. Air Force base in Shemya Island, Alaska

helped reprioritize infrastructure needs and reduce capital cost needs by more

than $1 million.

Waltham,

Ma.-based Extech Instruments announced another year of sustained growth with

sales of $48 million in 2008. Demand for handheld test and measurement

equipment helped the company during the rough economic times.

Austin-based Active Power Inc . has become an endorser

of the European Union Code of Conduct for Data Centers . The initiative is

designed to inform and stimulate data center operators and owners to reduce

energy consumption in a cost effective manger without hampering mission

critical facilities. Active Power will provide information about the Code to

data center operators and encourage them to join and comply with the Code.
