The Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis officially broke ground on its dynamic new neuroscience research building in early March. Washington University School of Medicine leaders and local officials were on hand for the proud moment along with members of our team and partners at Perkins + Will and McCarthy.

Once complete, the center will house breakthrough research to fight Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. Located at the epicenter of St. Louis’ medical community and the Cortex Innovation District, the 600,000 sf building unites scientists from diverse fields to advance research outcomes in neuroscience, neurosurgery, psychiatry and numerous associated fields. The university is hopeful the project will elevate its School of Medicine even higher in research programming in the country based on National Institute of Health funding.

“This is a thrilling project for the institution, our city and CannonDesign,” said David Polzin, executive director of design for CannonDesign. “The center is designed as a hub for neuroscience research innovation. It will amplify Washington University’s ability to attract and retain the world’s leading researchers and be home to significant breakthroughs for human health. It will also make a significant urban impact on the Medical Center and the Cortex Innovation District.”

School of Medicine researchers currently spread across the Washington University medical campus will be united in the new research center to fuel collaboration and accelerate discovery. The design organizes research teams by theme, as opposed to departments, and will also facilitate translational research partnerships with industry.
