Challenges

The New Surgical Tower addition to the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill. The Surgical Tower project is a new 325,000 SF medical tower including 24 fully licensed operating rooms. The operating rooms will be accompanied by Pre-Op and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) areas and 52 ICU rooms. The new tower will include a new Central Processing & Distribution (CPD) department for the entire hospital and a new sterile elevator. There will be connections to the existing hospital at multiple levels. The building will be located on the site of the existing hospital loading dock that serves the Anderson Pavilion, Women’s and Children’s Building and part of the Neuro-Sciences Hospital.

Solutions

RMF is performing the plumbing, mechanical, controls, electrical, lighting and security system commissioning to validate that the performance of these systems meet the design intent as set forth by UNC Health. Also included is the commissioning of the life safety systems such as lightning protection and refrigerant detection. The systems being commissioned include the following:

  • Protective systems – life safety (fire suppression, smoke evacuation, stair and elevator pressurization systems, lightning protection systems, emergency lighting systems, fire detection and alarm, refrigerant detection and evacuation)
