Green Georgia on My Mind
The state of Georgia leads the U.S. in the number of LEED-certified public buildings, according to the Sept. issue of Energy Ace Newsletter . The Georgia Dept. of National Resources has five LEED-certified buildings and Georgia Tech has one. In terms of national rankings of green building owners, Georgia DNR ranks third behind the City of Seattle and PNC Bank. Emory University in Atlanta is number 4 on the list.
David Freedman, chief engineer with Georgia DNR, estimates that his organization is saving 30% of annual costs on energy and 40% on water, thanks to the sustainable measures.
Georgia has 20 LEED-certified buildings altogether. Florida has six, North Carolina has five, South Carolina has four, Tennessee has three and Kentucky and Alabama each have one.
