Engineering Excellence Awarded to Top Ill. firms
Recognizing outstanding engineering, the Consulting Engineers Council of Illinois recently honored a number of design firms with Engineering Excellence Awards. The highest award was presented to KJWW Engineering Consultants of Rock Island for their design of the nation's largest geothermal system at the Great River Medial Center in Rock Island.
Recognizing outstanding engineering, the Consulting Engineers Council of Illinois recently honored a number of design firms with Engineering Excellence Awards.
The highest award was presented to KJWW Engineering Consultants of Rock Island for their design of the nation’s largest geothermal system at the Great River Medial Center in Rock Island.
The Center is a $120 million new medical campus comprising a 406,000 sq.-ft. hospital and two 90,000 sq.-ft. medical office buildings.
One of the KJWW’s greatest project innovations was to use a 15-acre man-made lake as the Center’s thermal source, which is capable of producing 1,500-tons of cooling.
Nine additional state firms were given honorary awards for their projects, including Teng & Associates, Inc. Their project, a reconstruction of the North Grant Park Garage was designed for the Chicago Park District and the Public Building Commission of Chicago.
The project was a complete reconstruction of the garage in which the building was demolished and a new structure was designed and constructed in under two years.
The new structure faced numerous challenges including its construction in a congested area, maintaining traffic flow around the project and coordinating with other city projects in the neighborhood. The new North Grant Park Garage has given the city an improved Michigan Avenue, a foundation for redeveloped, expanded public park spaces and modernized parking for city vehicles.
