Michael Heinsdorf, PE, LEED AP, CDT, 36
Assistant Director of MasterSpec, Architectural Computer Services Inc., Alexandria, Va.
BS Electrical Engineering, Drexel University
Originally hired in 2013 as an engineering specification writer for Architectural Computer Services Inc. (ARCOM), Heinsdorf is now the assistant director of MasterSpec, a master specification provider in the U.S. of the most widely-used specification system in the building construction industry. Before coming to ARCOM, he worked at The Burns Group in Philadelphia-twice. Between his two stints at Burns, he worked briefly for Hyperion Inc. in McLean, Va. In his current position, Heinsdorf is responsible for managing and updating the MasterSpec engineering libraries and organizing and leading the MasterSpec Engineering Review Committee. In addition to his electrical engineering training, he has acquired broad knowledge of engineering disciplines related to building construction, developing expertise in fire suppression, plumbing, HVAC, utilities, and many other areas of construction. Heinsdorf also has become ARCOM’s in-house expert on federal legislation by keeping up with and commenting on rulings by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Dept. of Energy that affect the engineering industry. He is a prolific contributor to ARCOM’s blog and has written several articles for Consulting-Specifying Engineer and other engineering publications. Sailboat racing is Heinsdorf’s favorite pastime. He has been sailing since he was 11 and started racing when he was a freshman at Drexel. He paid his way through college by cooking and bartending, and when he moved to Washington, D.C., he decided he did not want to eat takeout every night. He works on a particular technique or dish until he perfects it and has tried cooking through a cookbook, but his favorite thing to do in the kitchen is to try a medley of styles within one meal or dish.
