Kelly Eisenstein, PE, 33

Senior Fire Protection Engineer, City of San Diego

University of Maryland, BS Fire Protection Engineering

Eisenstein stands out in the fire protection and life safety industry with a combination of professional knowledge and experience, personality, and political awareness, and she is instrumental in a team’s successful navigation through complex design projects and client relations. The bigger and more complicated the project, the more exciting the task is for Eisenstein. She is also an adventure-seeker in her free time, with a goal to travel internationally at least once a year. In the office, Eisenstein has designed smoke control systems, analyzed hazardous materials, executed smoke control special inspections, provided egress modeling, negotiated requests for alternatives within a multitude of jurisdictions, and provided clients with expert fire and life safety code consulting services. She was responsible for many large clients’ high-rises in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, and she recently accepted a position as senior fire protection engineer for the City of San Diego. Before joining the city’s team, she worked at the fire protection consultant firm Rolf Jensen & Assocs. for 11 years where she watched the three-person team grow to 10 engineers. Presentations about fire protection and building are a consistent component of Eisenstein’s work, providing awareness of the importance of fire and life safety in the built environment to the design community. When she isn’t serving the industry or traveling, Eisenstein frequents the local pool table, the kickball field, and the beach.
