Notes from ASHRAE Summer Meeting in Long Beach, Calif.

But with general public concern and awareness of these issues continuing to grow, it is the ASHRAE leadership's goal to be in the forefront on these topics. Energy efficiency and sustainability are central topics at ASHRAE meetings. But with general public concern and awareness of these issues continuing to grow, it is the ASHRAE leadership’s goal to be in the forefront on these topics. The topic dominated the ASHRAE annual meeting held in Long Beach, Calif., in June.

Kent W. Peterson, P.E. FASHRAE, in his inaugural presentation as 2007-08 ASHRAE President, “Greater Efficiency Today, Blue Skies Tomorrow,” said, “ASHRAE understands the importance and need for action and we are becoming an engine for positive change. We have publicly stated our vision to continually improve building energy performance with the ultimate goal of market-viable net-zero-energy buildings by the year 2030.”

Of special note at this year’s meeting is the Distinguished 50-Year Member Award, given to persons who have been a member of the ASHRAE for 50 years and have performed outstanding service to the society. Twelve individuals received the award this year:

  • William Barbier, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, president, Concept Technology Inc., Hazelwood, Mo.

  • Hugh C. Carter, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, founder and chairman, Carter Engineers, San Diego

  • Robert J. Coughlin, fellow ASHRAE, life member, retired advisory facilities engineer, IBM, Cincinnati

  • John J. “Jack” Harmon, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, president, John J. Harmon Consulting Engineering, Richmond, Va.

  • Francois L’Anglais, fellow ASHRAE, life member, Sillery, Quebec, Canada

  • William A. Lotz, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, Acton, Maine

  • Carl W. MacPhee, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, honored posthumously

  • David N. McMinn, life member, Santa Rosa, Calif.

  • Presidential member Donald G. Rich, fellow ASHRAE, life Member, Fayetteville, N.Y.

  • Robert T. Tamblyn, P.Eng., fellow ASHRAE, life member, principal, Tamblyn Consulting Services, North York, Ontario, Canada

  • Eugene L. Valerio, life member, principal, Technical Marketing Services, Coos Bay, Ore.

  • Robert D. Wells, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, honored posthumously.

Also of note, ASHRAE recognized six recipients for the Exceptional Service Award. Among those included Dan Int-Hout III, Krueger, Richardson, Texas. See p.54 for Int-Hout’s article “Air Jet Dynamics of Air Diffusers.”
