Jumbo TES for Florida Convention Center

A new thermal-energy storage (TES) installation in Orlando is expected to cool a 1-million sq.-ft. addition to the Orange County Convention Center for 50% the cost of a new chilled water facility, reports the Orlando Utilities Commission and Trigen-Cinergy Solutions.

The new 17-million gallon tank is slated to produce 160,000 ton-hours of cooling—and up to 20,000 ton-hours at a time for up to eight hours—without the need to operate additional water chillers.

Even though the TES and associated equipment costs $5 million, Trigen-Cinergy and the Utilities Commission claim that a new chilled water facility would have cost in the range of $10 million. In addition, by running the TES at night, it’s anticipated to save $500,000 a year in electricity.

Trigen-Cinergy is a joint venture between Trigen Energy Corporation, a thermal energy specialist based in Houston, and the Cinergy Corporation with headquarters in Cincinnati.
