Rashid-Sumar joined Jensen Hughes (formerly Aon Fire Protection Engineering) in 2014, bringing with her more than 16 years of experience in building and fire code consulting, fire dynamics, timed-egress modeling, and performance-based design. She is the firm’s director of business development for the Middle East. After earning her degree, she worked for 6 years in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for Rolf Jensen & Associates Inc., which merged with Jensen Hughes in 2014. In 2007, she took on another challenging assignment in the Middle East to grow the firm’s Dubai operations. Her project experience includes hospitals, airports, U.S. federal government facilities, laboratories, hotels, residential apartments, high-rise buildings, and mixed-use facilities. Her specialties include life safety code consultation, fire dynamics and timed-egress modeling for atrium smoke control systems, and fire alarm systems design. She is a member of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Fire Code Committee and recently worked with industry peers on revising the 2016 edition of the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice. She is also an NFPA 101 international instructor, a member of the UAE Code Committee, and a member of the SFPE International Committee on Membership and Chapters Relations. Rashid-Sumar volunteers at her local mosque every weekend in the neighborhood of Satwa in Dubai. When not busy keeping the Middle East fire-safe, she is an avid reader of Jane Austen novels and a fan of science fiction films. She also enjoys spending time swimming at her community pool and cooking kid-friendly recipes with her two daughters. She recently joined karate classes with her husband and earned her yellow belt in December 2015.
