Figure 2: When looking toward the future of lighting design in hospitals and health care facilities, engineers are most concerned about changes to codes/regulation/standards, designing for energy conservation/efficiency, and keeping up with new/changing tThe Consulting-Specifying Engineer 2015 Lighting and Lighting Controls Study indicated that 47% of engineers specify, design, or make product selections for hospitals and/or health care facilities—and eight in 10 of these engineers are responsible for determining requirements/writing specifications and/or researching and evaluating options. Below are five lighting and lighting control findings as they relate to hospital and health care facility projects:

  1. Annual specified products value: The average engineering firm specifies $868,411 in total lighting and lighting control products for new and existing hospitals and health care facilities annually. Forty-three percent of these firms specify more than $1 million in lighting products for hospitals and health care facilities annually.
  2. Changes affecting design, products: Within the past 2 years, 59% of hospital and health care facility designs have been very affected by changes to LED technologies and specifications. Forty-one percent of engineers also reported that changes with lighting codes and standards have affected their projects.

  3. Top challenges:
    Inadequate budget (78%), interoperability and complementing systems (65%), and lighting controls sequence of operations, integration, etc. (64%) are the most difficult challenges for lighting engineering and design in hospitals and health care facilities.
  4. Products specified: Eight in 10 engineers specify LEDs; lighting controls; and/or T5, T8, or T12 fixtures for hospitals and health care facilities.
  5. Design factors: When selecting lighting products for hospitals and health care facilities, engineers compare product quality (100%), energy efficiency (99%), manufacturer's reputation (95%), initial cost (94%), and technical advantage (94%).
