Weekly merger, acquisition, deal update: July 20

M&A activity this week continued along its upward trend, as Morrissey Goodale tracked six domestic deals and three international deals. This most recent activity brings the total year-to-date deal count in the United States to 98, up 4% from the 94 domestic deals tracked through the same period in 2011. Including the U.S., the total global deal count is now 183, down just 3% from the 190 global deals tracked through the same period last year.

M&A activity this week continued along its upward trend, as Morrissey Goodale tracked six domestic deals and three international deals.  This most recent activity brings the total year-to-date deal count in the United States to 98, up 4% from the 94 domestic deals tracked through the same period in 2011.  Including the U.S., the total global deal count is now 183, down just 3% from the 190 global deals tracked through the same period last year.

Engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services firm Jacobs Engineering Group (Pasadena, CA) acquired a majority ownership of DM Petroleum Operations Company (DM) (New Orleans, LA), a firm that manages and operates the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The SPR is the world’s largest reserve of emergency crude oil, and DM has been the SPR Management and Operating (M&O) contractor since 1993. Link to details

International design, consulting, engineering, and management services firm ARCADIS (Arnhem, Netherlands) acquired 50-person BMG Engineering (Zurich, Switzerland), an environmental services and remediation company also providing services in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. BMG works predominantly for private sector clients and has a strong relationship with some of the major Swiss multinational chemical and pharmaceutical companies.  Link to details

Global engineering and architecture firm Kleinfelder (San Diego, CA) acquired environmental assessment and remediation services firm Ecobiological Group (New South Wales, Australia).  Ecobiological Group employs approximately 30 scientists, ecologists and planners specializing in environmental assessment, remediation and aboriginal cultural heritage and serves a wide variety of clients, including state and local governments, extraction and mining companies, and commercial developers.  Link to details

Multi-discipline engineering firm MS Benbow and Associates (MSB) (Metairie, LA) acquired a division of Omni Technologies (Metairie, LA) that specializes in security, video, surveillance and fiber optics for industrial, commercial and governmental clients.  The acquisition brings to MSB more than 15 years of industry experience and knowledge in turnkey fiber optic and digital video surveillance system design and installation.  MSB serves clients across the Gulf Coast and offers professional engineering services that include electrical, instrumentation and control systems, telecommunications, civil and structural, mechanical, drafting and design, and project management. Link to details

In a noteworthy initiative (though not considered a deal for the purposes of this update), turnkey provider of engineering, procurement and construction services to the upstream oil and gas industryAker Solutions (Oslo, Norway) acquired Subsea House and SSH Engineering (Stokke, Norway), two companies specializing in the assembly, testing and refurbishment of subsea tools and products and each owned by Subsea Holdings.  As part of the acquisition, Aker will acquire Subsea Holdings’ state-of-the-art subsea facility designed for testing of subsea products, systems and tools.  The facility is equipped with test bunkers and large test pits with overhead crane capacity suitable to perform most required testing and refurbishment scenarios for subsea systems, tools and accessories.  Link to details
