Martin Howell, LEED AP, CEM, 39

Associate, Arup, Los Angeles

University of Northumbria (Newcastle, England), BEng Building Services Engineering

Howell is an associate at Arup and leads the sustainability group within the Los Angeles office. He is a project manager with a background in energy planning, building services, and mechanical engineering. Howell joined Arup as a mechanical engineer in the United Kingdom in 1990 and specialized in applying low-energy and sustainable principles to traditionally high-energy-use buildings such as trading floors, laboratories, and data centers. Since relocating to the United States in 2002, Howell has pursued sustainability and energy planning projects, including the development of sustainability guidelines and implementation of rating systems. Howell organizes and participates in annual engineering visits to the University of Southern California architecture department, where engineers offer technical advice around sustainability, mechanical systems, and structural engineering to architectural students working on their design projects. Through his work with the Los Angeles Community College District, Howell has also spent time mentoring and coaching architecture and engineering interns. He is a new father who enjoys the outdoors and frequently hikes and camps with his wife throughout California and adjoining states. He has donated his time to organizations including Heal the Bay, Habitat for Humanity, and the Los Angeles Food Bank, but now he spends most of his time taking care of his four-month-old daughter. To help with his organic garden and to cut down on solid waste leaving the office, he started a used coffee grounds collection program at Arup.
