Designing electrical equipment for maintenance and NFPA 70B

By reviewing the updates to NFPA 70B, electrical consulting engineers can aid clients in designing new or existing electrical systems to facilitate maintenance, increase safety for the electrical worker and boost reliability.

ATTENDEES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION.

The 2023 edition of NFPA 70B: Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance has transitioned from a “recommended practice” to a “standard” and contains mandatory language for the development, implementation and operation of an electrical maintenance plan (EMP) program. Because of this change, electrical consulting engineers need to consider maintenance when designing or retrofitting a building’s electrical system.. By designing electrical, electronic and communication systems and equipment for maintenance, the client’s facility can then be operated and maintained more efficiently with increased safety and reliability.

To assist clients with compliance with NFPA 70B, electrical consulting engineers should design electrical systems to facilitate electrical maintenance for eventual occupancy and use of electrical infrastructure across installations in industrial plants, institutional and commercial buildings.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the changes that occurred with the 2023 revision of NFPA 70B: Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance.
  • Know where and when to reference NFPA 70: National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, and how these codes/standards interact.
  • Know how these changes impact your customers and designing for maintenance with real-life examples such as drawout circuit breakers, electronic trip units (ETUs) and continuous thermal monitoring.
  • Review how to break down the requirements and incorporate those requirements in either a new plan or an existing one.
