Telecommuting, growing numbers of contract employees, stressed corporate profits reducing the number of core employees, people working reduced amount of time past "normal" retirement age, a desire for part-time work, parenting, and elder care—all are contributing to a rapidly changing picture of how engineering work is and will be done. This professional development session will discuss options for you to consider to maximize your value in the evolving work world, and then solicit input from you on how you are dealing with these dynamics—in the hopes of giving others ideas on ways to cope.

  • Look at non-traditional work arrangements in the engineering workforce
  • Discuss the options in an informational Q&A setting.

Presenter: John Suzukida, Lanex Consulting LLC, Minneapolis

John Suzukida was Trane's Senior VP of Global Marketing & Strategy prior to founding Lanex Consulting LLC in 2002, which is primarily focused on working with leadership teams on business model changes. His 22-year career at Trane included starting their energy performance contracting business as its Vice President/General Manager, VP/GM of the Building Automation Systems Division, VP/GM of the Variable Air Volume Business, Marketing Manager of Large Chillers, and company spokesman for the CFC ozone depletion environmental issue. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois and served as president of its Mechanical Engineering Alumni Board. He earned his Professional Engineer license in Wisconsin and is on the Board of Directors for Steffes Corp., Terra-Therm Inc, and the Board of Advisors for CM Global. Client list includes Daikin Industries, Portland Energy Conservation Inc., McQuay, American Air Filter, The West Coast Zero Net Energy Coordinating Council, California Commissioning Collaborative Advisory Council, Danfoss, the National Conference on Building Commissioning, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Energy Engineering. He has authored numerous articles for industry publications, including as a Career Smart columnist for Consulting-Specifying Engineer.
