Consulting-Specifying Engineer's Top 5 most read articles online, for October 10-16, covered the 2016 MEP Giants,  integrating alternative power and existing electrical systems, 40 Under 40 program, preventing arch flash in mission critical facilities, and analyzing nontraditional HVAC systems. Link to each article below.

1. 2016 MEP Giants

The MEP Giants program lists the top 100 mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire protection engineering firms in the United States. The in-depth analysis of these firms appears in the August issue and reveals what's going on in the industry and how it has changed over the past few years.

2. Integrating alternative power and existing electrical systems

Despite (or as a result of) an economic downturn, the use of renewable energy options has grown over the past few years. This growth has been supported by federal and state programs including federal tax credits, state renewable portfolio standards, and a federal renewable fuels standard.

3. 40 Under 40 program

Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the most talented young individuals in the engineering community supporting the building industry. We want to shape the future of young engineers, and will do so by recognizing and encouraging them through mentoring articles in the magazine, young engineer networking events, and the 40 Under 40 program.

4. Preventing arc flash in mission critical facilities

To address arc flash problems, we turn to codes, and standards. NEC 240.87 is an important leap in arc flash safety for the electrical industry, along with NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584: IEEE Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations.

5. Analyzing nontraditional HVAC systems

Incorporating set thermal comfort criteria provides many benefits while increasing the use of high-performance HVAC systems for energy reduction.Thermal comfort is an indoor environmental-quality feature that has proven to impact productivity.
