American Superconductor Corporation (ASC), West Borough, Mass., will supply high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire to General Electric for development of a 100-mW HTS generator. The company claims its first-generation HTS wire "will meet GE's cost and performance targets for commercial generators.

American Superconductor Corporation (ASC) , West Borough, Mass., will supply high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire to General Electric for development of a 100-mW HTS generator. The company claims its first-generation HTS wire "will meet GE's cost and performance targets for commercial generators."

In a separate development, ASC unveiled a 5,000-hp HTS electric motor—claimed to be the largest ever. The company claims manufacturing costs are as much as 40% lower than for comparable conventional motors. Electrical losses of HTS motors are also said to be lower.

Intermagnetics will sell its low-temperature superconducting materials business, IGC-Advanced Superconductors of Waterbury, Conn., to a subsidiary of Finland's Outokumpu Group.

Tennessee Valley Authority has ordered a Distributed Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage power grid reliability solution from the team of American Superconductor and GE Industrial Systems. It was set to be deployed by November 2001.
