Sprinkler floods Scottish National Library

A faulty sprinkler doused books throughout the library, causing light water damage.

Quick action limited the damage when a faulty sprinkler sent 10,000 gallons of water through the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh , officials said Friday.

A spokesman said about 1,000 volumes suffered "light" water damage, The Glasgow Herald reported .

The spokesman told The Herald some of the books hit by Thursday's flood date from the 19th century. He said the structure of the building was unharmed.

Firefighters and library employees used pumps to divert water into the basement.

The National Library of Scotland is also known as the copyright or legal deposit library - it is one of six in the United Kingdom. It stores around 13 million books, although it is not a public lending library.
