Smart lighting control saves stadium money

The Rogers Centre in Toronto was retrofitted with automated, intelligent, and Web-based lighting controls that will cut its lighting costs by $300,000.

A "smart" Web-enabled lighting system is helping the Rogers Centre in Toronto save $300,000 in annual lighting costs, while monitoring and controlling lighting on the 12.7 acre-facility from a single desktop interface, according to a report by ITBusiness.ca .

Prior to the retrofit, the Rogers Centre spent about $4 million a year on electricity, with lighting costs accounting for half of the bill.

The complex, which hosts a variety of sporting and entertainment events, contains 7,000 lighting fixtures and can host as many as 60,000 spectators. With a target of reducing overall lighting energy consumption by 50%, Rogers Centre facility management opted for "intelligent lighting technology" from Encelium Technologies .

Encelium integrated a host of motion, light, and sound detectors, as well as dimmers for fixtures like underground parking lights, which previously had been on 24 hours a day. The retrofit enables operators to monitor and control lighting from a single desktop interface.
