Power Tracker System Maximizes Energy for Mauna Lani Resort

With a newly installed 250-kW photovoltaic (PV) power tracker, Hawaii's Mauna Lani Resort is projected to save loads of energy and money, thanks, in part, to the system's ability to track the sun, thereby capturing 30% more daylight than conventional PV systems.

With a newly installed 250-kW photovoltaic (PV) power tracker, Hawaii's Mauna Lani Resort is projected to save loads of energy and money, thanks, in part, to the system's ability to track the sun, thereby capturing 30% more daylight than conventional PV systems.

"These clean, reliable systems make sense both for our operating budget and the environment," notes Neil Bustamante, vice president of Mauna Lani Resort. "We project saving $5 million over the next 25 years."

The tracker, which covers three acres, follows the sun from early morning to late afternoon and supplies the majority of the resort's daytime water-pumping power load.

The system itself is made up of 24 rows of PV panels with a combined output of 10.5 kW AC per row. DC power is inverted from 500 VDC to 208 VAC, and then stepped up to 12,470 VAC to provide power to irrigation pumps located more than a mile from the power tracker site.
