NIST steps toward smart grid standards

In the first phase of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) plan to develop key standards for smart grid implementation, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) submitted its report on priorities in standardizing the technology. The report is about 100 pages (with an almost 200-page appendix) and is available on the NIST website at www.nist.gov .

As stated under the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, NIST has “primary responsibility” to create a framework that “achieve[s] interoperability of smart grid devices and systems.” NIST contracted EPRI to engage utilities, equipment suppliers, consumers, standards developers, and other stakeholders for the report.

NIST will review the EPRI report along with public comments before issuing its Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Roadmap this fall. According to NIST, the roadmap will “set priorities for interoperability and cyber security requirements, identify an initial set of standards to support early implementation, and list plans to meet remaining standards needs.”
