MSOE Sweeps Construction Management Contest

03/28/2005

Two student teams from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) took first place in a national construction management competition sponsored by Associated General Contractors (AGC) and Associated Schools of Construction (ASC).

The contest, which took place earlier this month in Las Vegas, coincided with ConExpo-CottAgg/IFPE and the AGC annual convention. This was the first time in the contest’s history that one school took first place in both categories: Design-Build, sponsored by Hensel Phelps Construction Co.; and Commercial Construction, sponsored by Turner Construction.

The winning Design-Build team was comprised of six MSOE students, who prepared and presented an architectural design, estimate, schedule and construction plan for a $12.6 million student union in California, all of which had to be completed within a 38-hour period. Team members were Michele Dunn, Thor Misko, Ryan Lent, Sean O’Gorman, Darby Rowland and Matthew Tadisch. Alternates were Veronica Konieczka, Saif Islam and Adam Stadelmann, and Associate Professor Robert Lemke, AIA, acted as the coach.

The winning Commercial Construction team was tasked with planning a high school inside of a juvenile detention facility, and the team’s proposal included a construction plan, estimate, construction schedule, safety plan and presentation—all within 26 hours. Team members were Molly Gray, Kevin Kaczynski, Dustin Stephany, Eric Geisler, Patrick Peterson and Laurel Ward. Alternate was Nicholas Lipinski. The team’s coach was Assistant Professor Michael Emmer.

Each team member received a trophy and watch, and the MSOE B.S. in Construction Management program received $4,500.
