"Motor Decisions Matter" Campaign Launched

A coalition of motor manufacturers, utilities, trade associations and government agencies have teamed up to promote energy conservation for motors.

The Motor Decisions Matter campaign has been launched to "encourage the use of sound motor management and planning as a tool for cutting motor energy costs and conserving energy."

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, energy accounts for more than 97% of a motor's total operating costs, therefore greater attention to motor system management can reduce energy costs by as much as 18%.

"We want corporate and plant managers to realize the financial and performance benefits of sound motor management, which includes proper motor planning, evaluation and analysis, inventory, procurement and repair," said Ted Jones, a spokesperson for one of the campaign's sponsors, the Consortium for Energy Efficiency.

"By addressing the motor decision-making process, businesses can more effectively capture energy savings in the motor replacement market, while also taking advantage of the savings potential of proper motor repair, sizing and management," he said.

Campaign initiatives include a Website, www.motorsmatter.org , a motor management planning kit, e-mails and case studies.
