Horizon Engineering Assocs., New York, announced that Michael C. English, PE, LEED AP , is the recipient of the 9th Annual Benner Award at the National Conference on Building Commissioning. English is the founding partner of HEA, the largest firm of commissioning professionals nationwide. He also created an innovative real-time online deficiency database for use on commissioning assignments to track and monitor the identification and resolution of deficiencies. Robert Bedelis has been named an Energy Efficiency Division team member at Michaels Engineering , La Crosse, Wis. Betsy del Monte, AIA, LEED AP , has been promoted to Dallas-based The Beck Group ’s first director of sustainability. Del Monte is an adjunct associate professor at Southern Methodist University where she teaches a course in sustainability, and is the immediate past president of AIA Dallas.

Newcomb & Boyd , Atlanta, announced the addition of four engineers to its staff: Christopher Rehrig and Cato Walthour III , have joined the firm as mechanical engineers; Daniel Davis joined as an electrical engineer; and George Walters III , as a plumbing engineer.

John Dasoqi, PE, SE , joined STV , Chicago, as vice president of the firm’s national Buildings & Facilities Division. Dasoqi brings to the firm more than 23 years of experience in design, program, and construction management and owner representation for a broad range of building types. BICSI announced that David C. Cranmer, RCDD , tendered his resignation as executive director, citing personal reasons. The Board of Directors appointed Betty Eckebrecht, chief financial officer, as acting executive director, effective immediately. Kristina M. Johnson , provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University, received the John Fritz Medal on May 5 from the American Assn. of Engineering Societies . The medal is considered the highest award in the engineering profession. The honor was established more than a century ago and has been given to Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Orville Wright. Johnson is the first woman to hold the university’s second-ranking position. She also holds an appointment as a professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She was elected a fellow of SPIE in 2007 and is known for pioneering work in “smart pixel arrays,” a field that has applications in displays, pattern recognition, and high-resolution sensors. She holds 129 U.S. and international patents and patents pending. SH Group Inc ., announced the retirement of chief executive officer John Magliano, PE . Magliano will remain as chairman of the board until the end of 2008. As part of the firm’s succession planning, Gary Brennen, PE , and Cyrus Izzo, PE , have been named co-CEOs of the firm. Magliano served the company for 38 years and will continue to be involved as a consultant.
